Serving is sacred work, with power, grace, and humility from the Spirit – small tasks done with love. This is what medical missions for nursing students is all about. According to Mother Teresa, we are touching the body of Christ, even though they may be covered with dirt, maggots, and wounds (Poplin, 2008).

The need for medical, dental, and other care in remote areas around the world correspond to areas where the Gospel is typically not prevalent or readily available. The need is so great that no one individual or organization can meet the need alone. By working together to empower local Christ followers in remote areas to reach the medical, dental, and other needs of people in their own communities as a door opener for the Gospel, we will be able to fulfill the Great Commission. This task requires multiplication of participants through discipleship. We must work together to equip and empower local Christ followers, handing them the baton to continue the race after the training team leaves.

Long-term impact in health-related missions from a short-term team must consider both long-term and short-term goals and objectives. Perhaps surprisingly, some or many of the long-term impact might not be directly related to healthcare! Understanding the potential long-term goals and objectives requires the short-term team to explore coordinated interaction between communities, local leaders, government, and technical experts. This workshop will identify several models for interacting where short-term healthcare workers can explore how to have a lasting long-term impact, as well as highlighting pitfalls to be avoided.

Provides an overview of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) with a case-based approach. Addresses the importance of NTDs in global health, clinical features and treatment of select NTDs, tool-ready programs addressing NTDs, and an overview of Mass Drug Administration (MDA).

This presentation will reflect on Selling Out for God, Growing Spiritually, Growing Relationally, and Giving God our Best – thoughts on my 30 years as a missionary nurse in Uganda, Mississippi and as NCF/USA Missions Director.

In our context in rural Kenya the vast majority of people we interact with self-identify as Christians. However, when asked to define and explain the gospel, there is often a lack of understanding of the depth and richness of God’s grace; coupled with a strong emphasis on keeping the law (legalism). In some individuals there is such an emphasis on legalism that legitimate questions arise regarding their relationship with Christ. As Christians we are called to share our joys and sorrows with each other. And to share, confess and repent (in community) of the many ways in which we evidence unbelief. It is so very tempting to hide the issues with which we struggle, so that others view us in a good “light”. We have found that as the depth and power of the Gospel is explored with trainees, it is crucial to model transparency and our own personal need for daily repentance.

Peritoneal dialysis can be life saving for patients with acute kidney injury and can be performed safely in the setting of mission hospitals. This session provides an overview of the indications, technique and outcomes of a PD program in a mission hospital in Africa.

This presentation is for those working in a mission hospital which has no ethical review process in place for potential research involving humans. Mission hospitals (and Christians everywhere) should have the highest ethical standards when involving patients and others in research.

Come dig into the hearts and minds of the Next Generation Leaders so we can best create opportunities to meet their lives up with the Mission of Jesus

Can a church in a poor and vulnerable community run a sustainable healthcare ministry in her community? Yes, if the church and short term medical team are well prepared for ministry. Here are the steps we have taken to enable local churches run sustainable healthcare ministries as result of short term medical teams.

The US is a much overlooked mission field. 96M people in America still live in areas designated as "medically underserved". All of those areas are communities where poverty is rampant and resources are low. Not only are those areas of great need, they are areas of tremendous opportunity where the harvest is ripe for the gospel. The director of CCHF will share an overview of the issues impacting this cross-cultural domestic mission field and will discuss how Christian health professionals are intentionally living out the Gospel through healthcare among the poor in the United States.

"Holistic Health" is a frequently used term in medical missions, but what does it mean? And how do we accomplish it? Drawing on the speaker's experience, case studies will illustrate lessons learned to make holistic health practical and to emulate Jesus, the Great Physician.
