SMI Philadelphia is designed to benefit both the community and the student participants: For the Community • To provide door-to-door hypertension, nutritional, diabetic foot neuropathy and diabetes screens while offering the Gospel, prayer and referrals to local churches to those who are interested • To provide hypertension, diabetes, HIV, nutrition and asthma information and education • To refer patients who do not have a health care provider to qualified local clinics for medical care For the Students • To teach Christian healthcare students to integrate their faith and future careers, and appropriately and compassionately address patient spiritual as well as physical needs • To give students valuable field and interpersonal experience in urban communities and urban healthcare • To equip and strengthen the students through discipleship, mentoring, and biblical truth, developing relationships with community members
